  • CEO calls on ban on methane ‘super-emitters’ – something that is easy to do thanks to satellite imagery and could lead to more than 1 gigaton of CO2e emission reduction

27 September 2023 – Global environmental intelligence company Kayrros has been named on Fortune’s annual Change the World list, which highlights companies making strides to tackle climate change, public health crises, gender and racial inequities, and lack of economic opportunity.

To assemble the list, Fortune solicited nominations from its global readership. Kayrros is listed amongst other global companies including Apple, Batelle, Biobot Analytics, Cisco, Gilead Sciences, Google Nest, Microsoft and Too Good To Go.

Kayrros, which uses satellite imagery and analytics to supply climate data to organisations worldwide, was evaluated according to measurable social impact, business results and degree of innovation. Fortune considered the reach, nature and durability of Kayrros’ impact; the benefit that brought to the company; and how forward-thinking the company was relative to others in the industry.

Fortune concluded that Kayrros was well deserving of a place on the list of companies, which is not ranked. See the full list hier.

Kayrros has been a loud voice in the climate conversation, calling for more rigorous and independent data to reveal discrepancies in reporting and support effective climate action. The company has also called for a ban on methane ‘super-emitters’ – something that is both easy to do, thanks to satellite imagery and analysis and low cost, and would have a profoundly beneficial climate impact: it could lead to a reduction of more than 1 gigatonne in CO2e emissions in just a few years, making it the most impactful climate intervention available to mankind.

Kayrros revealed massive methane leaks in Turkmenistan, prompting a major step forward in climate diplomacy between the US and Turkmenistan governments. The company also detected giant plumes of methane in Kazakhstan; the clouds had previously been dismissed as hot vapour.

Last year, Fortune Executive Features Editor Matt Heimer noted that technological advancements and big data had made it possible for smaller companies to have a major impact in a way that was not possible when Fortune began assembling the list nine years ago.

Kayrros is one of the first French companies to have been officially recognized in the list.

Antoine Rostand, president and co-founder of Kayrros, gave credit for the company’s inclusion to the team, praising their focus and commitment to Kayrros’ mission. Kayrros’ mission is to reduce greenhouse gases, protect people, ecosystems and assets and manage the energy transition.

‘We’re proud to have been named on Fortune’s list, and grateful to the team at Fortune for recognising the value of what we do,’ he said.

‘We have a team that approaches their work with dedication, diligence and persistence, and their unwavering commitment to our mission has been the key to our success. We are now the world leader in turning raw data from satellites and other sources into actionable insights that can lead to powerful climate solutions.

‘We are convinced that meaningful climate action begins with having access to precise, verifiable, independent data and insights, and that’s what we strive to provide to businesses, governments, investors and regulators. That is also why we are calling for a ban on super-emitters, something that is relatively easy to do with the technologies available, and something that will have a profound impact on the environment.

‘We hope our inclusion on Fortune’s list shows that with new technologies, we can have a meaningful and positive impact on the planet, and inspires doers and thinkers everywhere to consider working to that end.

‘We’re grateful to Fortune for recognising our work.’

Rostand thanked the many scientific institutions whose partnerships with Kayrros have contributed to its success. He singled out the European Space Agency (ESA), the French National Centre of Space Studies (CNES), National Centre of Scientific Research (CNRS), Climate and Environmental Sciences Laboratory (LSCE), and the Centre Borelli research unit.

He also thanked Kayrros’ investors for their ‘invaluable’ support.

Kayrros was recently selected for the French Tech 2030 programme, designed to support the 100 most promising French innovation leaders. The selected companies are developing breakthrough innovations that are particularly relevant to the themes of the $100 billion France 2030 investment plan.

It was also named one of the top 10 most innovative companies in energy and sustainability for 2023 by Fast Company. It was named a Tech Champion in 2022 by the Financial Times.

Kayrros is already a key data supplier to a number of major companies, investors, and organisations, including the UN Environment Programme and the International Energy Agency. Kayrros is the main data supplier to UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO).
